We Günther Domenig is an attempt to revise conventional biographies of architects, using the example of the Austrian Günther Domenig (1934–2012). His exceptional talent for designing complex, sculptural architecture, his obsession with total spatial control, and his relentless drive to implement these ideas are not called into question in this book.
However, he was not alone in these endeavors: There were many Günther Domenigs! His career is reconstructed here from the perspectives of clients, partners, collaborators, and stakeholders from other professions. Just as they were inspired by him, they, in turn, influenced the person and the architect Günther Domenig, seeking and finding in him an ally for realizing their own visions.
This publication presents “his” buildings and projects, complemented by short biographies and reflections on the role of the key individuals involved. It also provides a detailed examination of Domenig’s work as a professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the Graz University of Technology (1980–2000), which boosted his own career and was characterized by a dynamic exchange of personnel and knowledge in all directions.
