Auch die steirische Kunstszene befand sich in einem Aufbruch, der sich in der &#8222;trigon 67 \u2013 ambiente&#8220; manifestierte. Von Wilfried Skreiner, dem Direktor der Neuen Galerie (einer Institution des Landes) beauftragt, wurde die Gestaltung der Ausstellungsarchitektur von Domenig und Huth zu dessen melanchlolischem Symbol (weil sie noch in der Er\u00f6ffnnungnacht von einem Stum zerfetzt wurde).<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Diese Aufbruchsstimmung der 1960-er Jahre betraf aber auch die katholische Kirche, und damit den ersten bedeutenden Auftraggeber von Domenig und Huth. Nach dem 2. Vatikanischen Konzil propagiert sie eine \u00d6ffnung gegen\u00fcber der Gemeinde und Gemeindearbeit, die sich in einer Re-Organisation der Liturgie, einem Bildungsprogramm und ehrgeizigen Bau-Projekten darstellte, wie u.a. der P\u00e4dagogischen Akademie in Graz Eggenberg und im Neubau f\u00fcr die Kirche und des Gemeindezentrums in Oberwart, jeweils auf Basis eines Wettbewerbes, sowie dem Mehrzwecksaal der Schulschwestern, einem Direktauftrag an Domenig und Huth.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Auch das der Sozialdemokratie zuzurechnende Bankinstitut, die Zentralsparkasse der Stadt Wien, und der Grazer Schuhhersteller Humanic, erste wichtige Auftraggeber in Domenigs Solo-Karriere nach der Trennung von Eilfried Huth, zeichneten sich durch ein bemerkenswertes kulturelles Engagement aus, das sich nicht nur in Kultursponsoring, Kunstsammlungen und avantgardistischen Werbespots \u00e4usserte sondern auch die Gestaltung ihrer Filialen mit einschloss (G\u00fcnther Domenig wurde nach der ber\u00fchmten Z Favoriten noch mit drei weiteren Z-Filialen beauftragt und setzte insgesamt 8 Humanic-Filialen um).<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Die 1980-er und fr\u00fchen 1990-er Jahre<\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Auch die jungen liberalen Intellektuellen aus der katholischen Aktion um den sp\u00e4teren Landeshauptmann Josef Krainer jr. sahen eine dynamischen expressive moderne Architektursprache als Zeichen der Erneuerung. H\u00e4tte Josef Krainer jr. nicht Wolf-Dieter Dreibholz in die Bauabteilung des Landes geholt, h\u00e4tte es das Modell Steiermark nicht gegeben, keine Offensive in den Bildungsbauten des Bundes, keine Professionalisierung des Wettbewerbswesens, kein Haus der Architektur. Die Karriere G\u00fcnther Domenigs h\u00e4tte sich ganz ganz anders entwickelt, ebenso wie die gesamte Baukultur in der Steiermark. W\u00e4re Wolfgang Sch\u00fcssel nicht Bautenminister gewesen, w\u00e4ren die gro\u00dfen Universit\u00e4tsneubauten in Graz kaum realisiert worden.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Nicht zuletzt ist auch der Antritt der Professur an der TU Graz von besonderer Bedeutung: \u00a0Wer weiss, was aus ihm geworden w\u00e4re, h\u00e4tte er keine Professur erlangt. G\u00fcnther Domenig erfindet sich gewisserma\u00dfen ein drittes Mal neu. Der Status eines Professors \u00f6ffnete ihm T\u00fcr und Tor in Politik und Wirtschaft. Die Sicherheit der Professur ermutigte ihn, sich an das Steinhaus zu wagen. Sie erm\u00f6glichte ihm Zugriff auf Studierende: aus dem Pool rekrutierten sich nicht nur Mitarbeiter, Hermann Eisenk\u00f6ck und Gerhard Wallner entwickelten sich zudem auch zu seinen langj\u00e4hrigen Partnern, die ihm den R\u00fccken freihielten. Umgekehrt, stellt sich die Frage, was w\u00e4re aus uns allen geworden w\u00e4re, w\u00e4ren wir ihm nicht w\u00e4hrend des Studiums begegnet, h\u00e4tten nicht bei ihm gearbeitet und \/ oder h\u00e4tten seine Bauwerke nicht erfahren d\u00fcrfen&#8230;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Domenig inszenierte sich oft und gerne als Rebell, wenn nicht sogar als R\u00fcpel, wusste aber immer ganz genau, wann und gegen\u00fcber wem er sich so darstellen durfte und gegen\u00fcber wem er sich hingegen streichelweich benehmen musste. Wobei die \u00dcberg\u00e4nge fliessend waren, bediente er doch perfekt die Sehnsucht seiner Generation nach dem urt\u00fcmlichen unangepasste m\u00e4nnlichen Genie, das bei Bedarf \u2013 ohne Zeugen \u2013 auch \u00e4usserst anpassungsf\u00e4hig sein konnte. The Styrian art scene was also in a state of awakening, which manifested itself in &#8222;trigon 67 &#8211; ambiente&#8220;. Commissioned by Wilfried Skreiner, the director of the Neue Galerie (an institution of the province), the design of the exhibition architecture by Domenig and Huth became its melancholy symbol (because it was torn to shreds by a stum on the very night of the opening).<br \/>\nThis spirit of optimism of the 1960s, however, also affected the Catholic Church, and thus the first important client of Domenig and Huth. After the Second Vatican Council, it propagated an opening towards the parish and parish work, which manifested itself in a re-organization of the liturgy, an educational program and ambitious building projects, such as the Pedagogical Academy in Graz Eggenberg and the new building for the church and the parish center in Oberwart, both on the basis of a competition, as well as the multipurpose hall for the school sisters, a direct commission to Domenig and Huth.<br \/>\nThe banking institution associated with the Social Democrats, the Zentralsparkasse der Stadt Wien (Central Savings Bank of the City of Vienna), and the Graz shoe manufacturer Humanic, the first important clients in Domenig&#8217;s solo career after his separation from Eilfried Huth, were also distinguished by their remarkable cultural commitment, which not only manifested itself in cultural sponsoring, art collections and avant-garde advertising spots, but also included the design of their stores (after the famous Z Favoriten, G\u00fcnther Domenig was commissioned to design three more Z stores and implemented a total of 8 Humanic stores).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The 1980s and early 1990s<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The young liberal intellectuals from the Catholic Action around the later provincial governor Josef Krainer jr. also saw a dynamic expressive modern architectural language as a sign of renewal. If Josef Krainer jr. had not brought Wolf-Dieter Dreibholz into the state&#8217;s building department, there would have been no Styrian model, no offensive in the federal government&#8217;s educational buildings, no professionalization of the competition system, no House of Architecture. G\u00fcnther Domenig&#8217;s career would have developed quite differently, as would the entire building culture in Styria. If Wolfgang Sch\u00fcssel had not been Minister of Building, the large new university buildings in Graz would hardly have been realized.<br \/>\nLast but not least, his assumption of the professorship at the Graz University of Technology is of particular significance: who knows what would have become of him if he had not attained a professorship. In a sense, G\u00fcnther Domenig reinvented himself a third time. The status of professor opened doors for him in politics and business. The security of the professorship encouraged him to venture into the Steinhaus. It gave him access to students: not only did he recruit staff from the pool, Hermann Eisenk\u00f6ck and Gerhard Wallner also developed into his long-term partners, who had his back. Conversely, the question arises, what would have become of all of us if we had not met him during our studies, had not worked for him and \/ or had not been allowed to experience his buildings?<br \/>\nDomenig often and gladly staged himself as a rebel, if not even as a bully, but always knew exactly when and to whom he was allowed to present himself in this way and to whom, on the other hand, he had to behave in a caressingly soft manner. The transitions were fluid, as he perfectly served his generation&#8217;s longing for the primitive, unadjusted male genius, who could also be extremely adaptable if necessary &#8211; without witnesses.
