Ein Projekt von Tracing Spaces im Rahmen der Architekturtage 2018

Sa, 9. Juni 2018, 16:00 – 21:00

The Northwest railway station in Vienna is the last logistics-hub close to the city center which is soon to be replaced by new urban development. This is in answer to a growing demand for new housing accentuated by a radical increase in the global flow of goods which has generated a network of highly specialized and highly effective multimodal logistic-archipelagos distanced from the urban cores but linked to transnational corridors for transportation.

Both proponents and critics of unbounded global flows of goods draw on the medium of video animation: a technique perfectly suited for the representation of dynamic movement in time and space, rhythms of flow, acceleration and deceleration, but also for zooming in and out, for fluidly scaling up and down between a macro and micro political perception of routes and nodes, switching from abstract maps to bird’s-eye views, road landscapes, vehicles, and close-ups of people. At the same time a degree of abstraction defuses several legal and ethical issues related to the photographic or video (mis)representation of real people.

In the atmosphere of the old transshipment point for goods the Northwest Station, Tracing Spaces shows selected animations a.o. by Alliance for European Logistics, Amazon, DB Schenker, LKW Walter, which combine (respectively) abstract cartography, infographics and comic-style elements (in the Otto Neurath tradition), depicting the optimization of the dynamic flows of goods from order-click over the waypoints of production, packaging, warehousing, shipping and distribution at the hubs to other means of transport and on up to delivery to the end customer. Critical perspectives include artistic works among others the documentary ‘The Forgotten Space’ by Allan Sekula and Noel Burch which focuses on the working conditions of labour forces involved in maritime navigation as well as at important inland hubs, or ‘Bus Stop Nickelsdorf’ by Tracing Spaces which highlights the reactivation of a border checkpoint and the use of coaches to (de-)mobilise the influx of refugees during the so called refugee crises back in 2015.
